US Envoy Warns Spain to Be 'Very Careful' in Deepening Ties with China

On May 27, 2026, US Ambassador Benjamin Leon delivered a stark warning to Spain regarding its growing ties with China. In his public address, Leon strongly advised Spain to tread carefully as it considers deeper economic engagement with Beijing, particularly in sensitive sectors such as data management, telecommunications, and defense.

Leon expressed his apprehensions about Spain's contracts with companies linked to Huawei, which the US government has labeled as a security threat. He remarked, "I don’t think that attains the level of security at which Spain and the United States are exchanging (information)." He stated that while negotiations with China might be beneficial, Spain must ensure that critical areas remain safeguarded from Chinese influence.

Emphasizing the implications of such ties, Leon noted, "China seeks to dominate critical technologies. It uses unfair trade practices and economic coercion to expand its strategic influence. And that poses real risks to our supply chains, our research, and our security." He called on European nations to fortify their research, protect intellectual property, and uphold democratic values amid China's aspirations.

Relations between the US and Spain have faced tension, particularly over Spain's military spending commitments to NATO. Last October, former President Donald Trump hinted at potential economic sanctions against Spain for not raising its defense spending to 5% of GDP, a commitment that has not been fully met. Leon acknowledged the frustrations stemming from these issues but downplayed the likelihood of immediate punitive measures, indicating a preference for continued cooperation.

He praised the importance of US naval bases in Spain, describing them as "fundamental" for collective defense as global security landscapes become increasingly precarious. Despite these challenges, Leon expressed optimism about finding compromises that would allow both nations to collaborate effectively. "We live in very dangerous times. Europe must be prepared to defend itself. The US will be at its side," he concluded.
