Hunan, China—The mountain streams swelled into violent rivers after a massive rainfall event struck the rural village early this afternoon. The surge hit the residential valley with little warning.

Four people were swept away by the torrent as they attempted to move their belongings to higher ground. Their bodies were recovered downstream by search teams later in the day.
